I am ex Raf and ex MOD we as current and ex employees are limited by the official secrets act as to what we can say I took early voliuntary redundancy in 2004 and whatever you view on national defence projects these cuts in support to front line services really makes a difference St Athan was the manpower holding cell for front line replacements in the event of losses and the work carried out by Raf and civillian workers was to suppport front line squadrons this work is now being carried out by Bae systems at a much increased cost per Aircraft no mention of the real costs lost in building project Red Draggon super hannger but more than this the personnal loss of work to individuals and the devastating effect to the local ecconomy mirrored by empty shops in Llantwit major is clear to see and the Torries well hooray their answer another blooming Defence review that is how this mess started in the mid 1990’s I suppose they needed our money fir their expense claims very hypocritical

Bizarrely, this questionnaire completely avoids the largest single issue of ’strategy’, that of nuclear weapons, ie Trident. Almost all of the discussion in the UK parliaments defence select committee, and submissions from chefs of staff to the UK parliament, this year, which decided on this consultation, related to the cost/skills/timetable/requirement of the Trident nuclear missile programme. Not only is this the MODs biggest single invoice, but also the key strategic decision on what type of defence programme is required. Whilst there is significant disagreement on direction within the political world about this, there is also a significant disagreement on direction within the ‘top brass’ of the MOD. This is the NukeSubs v TyphoonEurofighter v Conventionalforces debate. The questionnaire then goes on about areas of possible deployment, all of which are ongoing, but not one of these has found any use for a nuclear capability, which probably explains this glaring omission from the MODs questionnaire. A case of not being able to discuss the big white elephant in the room, let alone being able to deploy/finance a suitable strategy to make use of it.
